Design Approach

A rear extension was added, resulting in a compact

L-shaped courtyard garden. The layout was shaped largely by the client’s detailed eye and clear vision for the space, with a strong client-led approach guiding the overall feel and finer detailing. Our role focused on delivering key elements within that framework, including the installation of the living wall and the planting scheme to support the client’s vision.

How the design evolved

Compact Layout

The L-shaped layout was carefully organised to maximise usable space without overcrowding.

Vertical planting approach

A living wall and floating shelves introduced greenery without taking up floor space.

Light and reflection

A large mirror was strategically placed to reflect light and planting, while garden lighting highlights key areas and creates a soft ambient mood at night.

Microclimate influence

A neighbouring Victorian substation vents warm air into the courtyard, supporting more sensitive planting.

Focal point and outlook

A central statue is positioned to be viewed from the house and reflected within the garden.

Charred timber cladding

Charred cladding was introduced around the living wall and boundary, linking with finishes used inside the extension.

Paving selection

Tiles were chosen by the client to add detail and character within a compact space.

Automatic irrigation

The living wall irrigation creates a gentle dripping sound, adding a calm, tranquil atmosphere to the space.
