People often assume that fewer plants automatically means a lower-maintenance garden. But in many cases, the opposite is true. When a border is planted too sparsely, you leave large areas of exposed soil between plants. Nature doesn’t tend to leave that space empty for long — and very often, weeds are what fill the gaps. A better approach is to plant in groups and allow plants to establish, spread and eventually knit together. In this example, Verbena has been planted in large groups to create one strong mass of colour rather than lots of isolated individual plants. You don’t need anything close to these numbers in an average home garden. Depending on the size of your border, the plants you’re using and your budget, try grouping plants in threes, fives or sevens rather than scattering single plants throughout the bed. As those groups mature, they begin to cover more of the soil. That can mean less exposed ground for weeds to colonise, while also creating stronger blocks of colour, better visual impact and a much more established-looking garden. This doesn’t mean cramming as many plants as possible into a border. The correct spacing still matters, and you need to consider the mature size of each plant. The aim is to design the planting so that, once established, the plants work together rather than sitting as isolated specimens surrounded by bare soil. Sometimes saving money by buying fewer plants at the beginning can actually create more work later. BULBS IN YOUR LAWNS 🌷 How do you plant bulbs in a lawn so they look natural rather than like somebody has deliberately planted them in rows? One of the simplest tricks is to stop trying to make the planting too neat. When bulbs are evenly spaced or planted in straight lines across a lawn, the finished result can look very man-made. If you want a more natural-looking display, take a handful of bulbs and gently toss them across the grass. Then plant them roughly where they land. Some will be closer together, some will be further apart and you'll naturally create irregular groups across the lawn. When they start appearing through the grass in spring, the effect should feel much more natural than a perfectly spaced pattern. There’s also a simple way to actually get the bulbs into an established lawn without digging up large sections of turf. Bulb planters can work brilliantly in cultivated soil, but they can sometimes be awkward when you’re trying to push them through established grass and its root system. Instead, use an ordinary garden spade. Make a small cross-shaped cut through the turf where you want to plant. Push your spade into the ground just behind the cut and gently lever the turf back enough to create an opening. Place the bulb into the opening at the appropriate planting depth, release the spade and lightly press the turf back into position. You haven't removed a plug of lawn or dug a large planting hole, so there is very little visible disturbance once you've finished. What bulbs can you plant in a lawn? There are plenty of spring-flowering bulbs that can work well when naturalised through grass. The right choice will depend on your soil, drainage, aspect and how you use the lawn. Crocus, snowdrops, certain narcissus and daffodils are some of the traditional choices for naturalising in grass. Smaller bulbs can also create fantastic displays, particularly where you're looking for an informal meadow-style effect. Whatever you're planting, check the recommended planting depth and spacing for that particular bulb rather than assuming every bulb should be planted in exactly the same way. Think about drainage Bulbs generally don't want to spend long periods sitting in saturated ground. If part of your lawn becomes extremely wet or waterlogged through winter, don't automatically assume it's the best place to plant simply because you have available grass. Look at the conditions first. The right plant in the right place will nearly always perform better than trying to force a particular idea into unsuitable conditions. One of the biggest mistakes happens AFTER flowering If you're naturalising spring bulbs through your lawn, remember that the job isn't finished once they've flowered. After flowering, the leaves need time to continue growing and eventually die back naturally. During this period, the bulb is replenishing its energy reserves for the following year. If you immediately mow everything down as soon as the flowers disappear, you can reduce the bulb's ability to build up energy for next season. So before planting bulbs throughout an entire lawn, think about how and when you normally mow it. You may need to leave sections of the lawn longer for a period after flowering. That is something worth considering before you plant, rather than discovering it next spring when you want to cut the grass. The simple method The principle is straightforward: Don't plant perfect rows. Scatter the bulbs to create irregular spacing. Plant them at the correct depth for the variety. Keep disturbance to the existing lawn to a minimum. And give the foliage sufficient time after flowering before mowing it down. The actual planting doesn't need to be complicated. A few minutes spent thinking about where and how you plant your bulbs now can make the finished result look far more established when they emerge next spring. GARDEN FEATURE ON A BUDGET 🌿 You don’t always need a massive garden budget to make a big difference to your outdoor space. Sometimes the smartest approach is to pick one area of the garden and concentrate your budget where it will have the most impact. A relatively small amount of walling could be used to create a raised planting bed, built-in garden seating, a BBQ or outdoor cooking area, a feature wall, a change of level, a focal point or even a simple water feature. Rather than trying to change the entire garden at once, think about the one feature that could make the biggest difference to how the space looks and how you actually use it. Permeable resin-bound surfaces — where does all that water actually go? 💧 I’m down at RDC Paving Centre in Clondalkin, Dublin, Ireland taking a look at permeable resin-bound surfacing and putting it to a very simple test — a bucket of water straight onto the surface. With a correctly designed permeable system, water passes down through the resin-bound surface rather than simply running across it. But the finished surface is only one part of the story. For a permeable resin-bound system to work properly, what happens underneath the finished surface matters too. The base, build-up, drainage and overall specification all need to be appropriate for the system being installed. We’ll get into much more of that in another video, including the aggregate, grading, build-up and some of the differences people need to understand when looking at resin surfacing. Resin-bound surfacing can provide a clean, seamless finish while allowing water to pass through when installed as part of a suitable permeable system. It can be used across a wide range of residential and commercial projects, including driveways, garden and outdoor areas, paths and pedestrian areas, apartment developments, hotels, shopping centres, commercial developments and larger communal outdoor spaces. RDC can supply the materials and also offer a supply-and-fit service for residential and commercial projects. This first video isn't about getting buried in all the technical details. I simply wanted to show you what a permeable resin-bound surface actually looks like when you put a serious amount of water onto it.
