This planting bed was originally meant to be low maintenance, but it ended up being planted with a bit of everything — different shrubs and plants with no real flow, and some choices that weren’t particularly well suited to the site. That can happen when a contractor is very good at building gardens, laying paving, putting in walls and getting the structure right, but may not have the same depth of knowledge when it comes to choosing exactly which plants will perform best in a particular location. There’s nothing wrong with that — they’re different skill sets. This is where experience across designing, building and maintaining gardens really matters. You get to see what plants actually do after a few years, how they cope with exposure, wind, wet ground, dry periods and real Irish weather rather than just how they look on a planting plan. This garden is in County Kerry, Ireland, with the wild Atlantic only a couple of kilometres away and strong coastal weather coming directly in. That has a massive influence on what will and won’t work here. The important thing is that we’re not just ripping everything out and starting again. The aim is to keep what we can, reuse what we can and recycle where possible. We’ll retain the hydrangeas, improve some of the soil structure, tidy the bed and work with what is already there rather than throwing money at a complete rebuild. From there, I’d simplify the planting palette and repeat a smaller number of plants throughout the bed. Achillea, ornamental grasses, salvias and nepetas would give colour, movement and different leaf textures without filling the space with large evergreen shrubs. I’d plant in groups of threes and fives to create stronger visual impact and make the whole bed feel more considered and connected. This approach also helps keep costs down. You can bring in your own landscape contractor, use a handyman or gardener, or if you’re comfortable doing the work, it’s something you can tackle yourself in stages. Low maintenance doesn’t mean planting one of everything, and improving a garden doesn’t always mean replacing everything either. Often the best result comes from keeping what works, improving what you already have, choosing better plants for the site and spending money only where it actually makes a difference. Why is your ground wet? While travelling through West Cork for an on-site consultation near Carriganass Castle, Kealkill, just outside Bantry, I took some time to look beyond the garden itself and understand what was actually happening with the water on the site. The ground in this area can be difficult, with heavy clay, rock and poor natural drainage. But poor soil was only part of the story. The surrounding valleys, slopes and streams were also influencing how water was moving through the land. That’s why, before installing drains, French drains, soakaways or any other drainage system, it’s important to understand why the ground is wet in the first place. Not every wet garden is caused by the same thing. You can have drainage problems because of: Heavy clay soil Compacted ground Poor levels Water coming from neighbouring land Slopes and valleys High water tables New-build soil compaction Poorly prepared gardens Surface water runoff Rock close to the surface And you absolutely do not need to live beside a river, stream or mountain to have a wet garden. I see plenty of drainage problems on flat sites and new developments too. After 25 years working on outdoor spaces across Ireland, I’ve seen drainage issues caused by everything from poor soil preparation to badly planned levels and water being pushed from one area into another. Water can be one of the biggest challenges in a garden. Sometimes we have far too much of it, and sometimes not enough. Patio on a Budget This large patio at the front of a coastal home simply wasn’t being used. The biggest issue was exposure. Strong coastal weather and sea winds were hitting the space, so even though there was a huge amount of natural stone paving, it wasn’t actually functioning as a comfortable place to sit, relax or entertain. Rather than ripping everything out and starting again, the better approach here is to work with what’s already on site. The plan is to reduce the amount of paving, introduce more grass and planting, soften the overall shape of the patio, and reuse the existing natural stone in a better location where it will actually get used. We’ll also introduce large pots with specimen trees to help break up the paving, add colour, create height and soften what is currently a very hard landscaped space. This is a good example of why garden design doesn’t always have to mean buying more materials. Sometimes the biggest savings come from reusing what you already have, moving materials to a better part of the garden, and designing around how the space is actually used. For coastal gardens especially, wind, shelter, planting choice and layout all matter. A patio might look good on a plan, but if it’s sitting in the most exposed part of the garden, it may never get used properly. This approach keeps the budget under control, reduces waste and gives the garden a much better balance between paving, lawn, planting and outdoor living space. If you live by the coast, wind can absolutely batter a garden. Exposed coastal sites can be difficult to plant because strong winds can damage larger leaves, dry plants out quickly and make outdoor spaces feel far less comfortable to use. But creating shelter doesn’t always mean planting huge trees or completely blocking off the garden. Smaller trees such as rowan, hawthorn and whitebeam can help filter the wind while still allowing light through and keeping the garden feeling open. The key is to mix your planting and build up layers rather than relying on one single hedge or one large tree. On exposed sites, the right combination of trees, hedging and lower planting can make a massive difference over time. This garden is in a very exposed coastal location in County Kerry, so the aim here is to work with the conditions rather than fight against them.
